We understand that skin changes during pregnancy can be extremely distressing for expectant mothers. Any suspicion of a pregnancy dermatosis should therefore be evaluated by an experienced dermatologist. However, the most common pregnancy dermatoses do not pose a risk to the unborn child.
The skin conditions that can occur during pregnancy include:
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (accumulation of bile acids in the liver)
Impetigo herpetiformis (psoriasis-like skin changes during pregnancy)
Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (begins in stretch marks, spares the navel)
Pemphigoid gestationis (hives and blisters, involving the navel region)
Atopic eruption of pregnancy (“neurodermatitis” during pregnancy)
How can a pregnancy dermatosis be recognized?
The main symptom is itching, while the skin changes usually develop secondarily.
How can a pregnancy dermatosis be treated?
In all cases, your skin should be sufficiently moisturized with a lipid-replenishing cream (hydrolotion, lipolotion). We also prescribe antipruritic creams, if necessary with an extremely low cortisone content, as well as antihistamines. If itching remains severe, we can temporarily use cortisone in tablet form.
