Dr Brandenburg, your pediatric dermatologist in Hamburg and a member of the “Working Group for Pediatric Dermatology,” understands that children’s skin is not simply a smaller version of adult skin. It is thinner, more sensitive, and its barrier function is not yet fully developed. This makes it more susceptible to infections, irritations, and allergic reactions. Children also tend to react very emotionally to skin problems — itching, pain, or visible skin changes can affect their well-being and self-confidence, as these symptoms are a constant and distracting burden during childhood.
Early and proper care of the body’s largest organ can prevent long-term skin problems and build the foundation for healthy skin in adulthood. In the pediatric dermatology department of our Hamburg practice, we rely on gentle methods, comprehensive diagnostics, and personal care to detect and treat skin conditions in your child as early and effectively as possible.
Neurodermatitis is one of the most common — and most burdensome — skin conditions in childhood. Dry, itchy skin patches can cause not only physical discomfort but also emotional distress. Children suffering from neurodermatitis often sleep poorly, become emotionally irritable or tense, and have difficulty concentrating. The disease becomes an unwelcome companion in everyday life, leaving parents feeling helpless as they struggle to manage their child’s symptoms. As your pediatric dermatologist in Hamburg, we are here to be a reliable and experienced partner, providing comprehensive information and continuous support throughout treatment.
The condition usually occurs in flare-ups — periods of intense itching and inflammation alternate with calmer phases. While some children outgrow neurodermatitis with age, for others it remains a lifelong condition that can, however, be effectively controlled with targeted treatment. Early therapy helps reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups and significantly improves the child’s quality of life.
The exact causes of neurodermatitis are not yet fully understood, but there are clear connections to genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and allergies. Common triggers include:
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions during adolescence and can cause deep emotional distress far beyond the visible skin changes. The morning look in the mirror, the feeling that everyone’s eyes are on the inflamed spots, and the fear of permanent scarring can severely impact self-esteem. Especially during a life phase in which appearance plays a central role, acne is often perceived as a flaw that affects overall well-being and social life.
The cause lies in the overproduction of sebum by the skin’s sebaceous glands. During puberty, hormonal changes — particularly the increased release of androgens — lead to higher sebum production. This excess oil combines with dead skin cells and clogs pores. Bacteria, especially Cutibacterium acnes, multiply in this oily environment, resulting in inflammation, pustules, and deep, painful nodules.
At this stage, the skin is particularly sensitive — it may appear oily and shiny, yet irritated and red. While mild forms of acne cause only occasional pimples and blackheads, more severe cases can lead to widespread inflammation and scarring if left untreated. Many teenagers not only suffer from the physical symptoms but also withdraw socially due to their skin condition. Timely treatment by your pediatric dermatologists in Hamburg can improve the skin’s appearance and help restore emotional balance and self-confidence — so that young people can feel comfortable in their skin again.
Special cleansing products and creams help reduce excess sebum and prevent inflammation.
Creams containing active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids support skin renewal and fight acne-causing bacteria.
In persistent cases, anti-inflammatory antibiotics in the form of creams or tablets can be beneficial.
For severe acne, treatment with isotretinoin may be considered to sustainably reduce sebum production.
Our experienced beauticians offer peels, microdermabrasion, and professional deep cleansing to unclog pores and minimize inflammation.
In particularly stubborn cases, modern laser treatments can help eliminate acne bacteria and stimulate skin renewal.
An infection with scabies mites in children over the age of two is treated with a permethrin-containing cream that is applied to the entire skin surface and washed off after eight to twelve hours. In most cases, one treatment is sufficient; however, our pediatric dermatology team in Hamburg recommends a second application after one week to ensure complete eradication. For persistent infections, permethrin is also available in tablet form for children weighing more than 15 kg.
For the treatment of head lice, we prescribe a special silicone oil containing two-phase dimethicone, which is sprayed onto the scalp and hair, suffocating the parasites. Larvae and eggs are also killed. After treatment, the hair should be thoroughly combed with a fine-tooth nit comb to remove the parasites effectively. In addition, bedding should be washed at 60 degrees, and all hairbrushes should be cleaned.
Molluscum contagiosum is an extremely common, self-limiting viral infection of the skin, particularly affecting young children and adolescents. Small, dome-shaped, flesh-colored bumps may appear. Scratching can release virus-containing fluid, leading to the spread of new lesions. Therefore, we strongly recommend treatment to reduce the risk of self-reinfection.
These are overreactions of the body to pollen, food, or other irritants. There are no strict age limits for allergy testing; however, in most cases, tests are not performed in children under the age of four.
Your pediatric dermatology team in Hamburg would like to give you a brief overview of the acute skin rashes we also treat:
A highly contagious viral infection that begins with fever, cough, and cold-like symptoms, followed by a characteristic red rash. Measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis.
A bacterial infection caused by streptococci, characterized by a fine, sandpaper-like rash, fever, and sore throat. A “strawberry tongue” is also a common symptom.
A usually mild viral illness presenting with a pale red rash, swollen lymph nodes, and occasionally mild fever. However, infection during pregnancy can be dangerous.
Caused by parvovirus B19, this condition presents with a bright red rash on the face (“slapped-cheek syndrome”) and body. It is generally harmless but can pose risks to pregnant or immunocompromised individuals.
A viral infection that causes painful blisters on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth. It usually heals on its own.
A highly contagious infection with itchy blisters appearing all over the body. After recovery, the virus remains dormant and may reactivate later in life as shingles.
A viral illness characterized by several days of high fever followed by a pale red rash that disappears within a few days.
A common skin irritation in the diaper area caused by moisture, friction, and irritants in urine or stool. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and sometimes blistering. Consistent skincare, breathable diapers, and, if necessary, anti-inflammatory creams can relieve symptoms.
