Diagnosing Skin Infections

The natural protective layer of the skin surface contains a variety of bacteria and fungi. However, if the skin is injured or the immune system is weakened, they can penetrate deeper skin layers and trigger infections. Bacteria are responsible for causing boils and abscesses. Viruses cause warts, shingles, or cold sores. Common fungal infections include nail and athlete’s foot. Transmission can occur directly from humans or animals, as well as indirectly through, for example, shower tiles in swimming pools. Depending on the size and depth of the infection, the skin reacts with redness, swelling, warmth, pus or blister formation, scaling, itching, or eczema. The symptoms are therefore extremely diverse. To determine the type of skin infection as quickly and accurately as possible, we recommend professional diagnosis in our dermatology practice. In most cases, anti-inflammatory or antifungal creams, tablets, or even laser therapy can lead to rapid improvement. Feel free to schedule your consultation appointment.

Your questions, our answers

How are skin infections diagnosed?

After an examination with a dermatoscope, we take swabs for bacteria and viruses and collect skin samples, which are then examined further under the microscope.
Once the pathogen has been identified, we use targeted medications containing antibiotic, virostatic, antifungal, or antiparasitic agents, administered either locally or systemically.
