In autoimmune diseases, the body produces antibodies against itself and attacks the structural proteins of the skin and its appendages. Triggers for the production of these antibodies can include medications, infections, or tumor diseases.
Among the well-known ones are the rare butterfly rash (lupus erythematosus) as well as blistering diseases such as pemphigus vulgaris and bullous pemphigoid. Autoimmune causes are also suspected in vitiligo (white spot disease), alopecia areata, and lichen planus.
How is an autoimmune dermatosis diagnosed and treated?
Through a blood sample, we detect autoantibodies, and additionally obtained skin samples are examined histologically. In most cases, an autoimmune dermatosis is treated with cortisone-containing creams and tinctures. Medications that suppress the immune system are administered orally or intravenously.
