Neurodermatitis, Eczema, and Itching

Neurodermatitis, eczema, and itching can cause distressing symptoms that interfere with daily life — especially when itching leads to scratching and bacterial superinfections further worsen the skin condition. The essential prerequisite for effective therapy and relief is identifying the underlying causes. We help you stabilize the skin barrier and use antipruritic, anti-inflammatory creams so that you can feel significantly more comfortable again.

Your questions, our answers

What is neurodermatitis?

This chronic skin inflammation often occurs together with hay fever and asthma. The underlying weakening of the skin barrier is genetically inherited. The inflammations usually appear in the bends of the arms and knees, as well as on the face and neck. Many patients also suffer from additional allergies. The final diagnosis should be made by a dermatologist.
No, dry skin does not necessarily indicate neurodermatitis; itching can have many other causes.
The basis of our treatment — and usually very effective — is skincare aimed at strengthening the skin’s natural barrier function. Depending on the level of inflammation, we temporarily use anti-inflammatory agents. In addition, we discuss with patients how to avoid specific irritants.
The chronic condition occurs in phases. However, most of our patients experience few or no symptoms after the age of 30.
Eczema is a chronic, non-infectious inflammation of the skin. The first step is to identify and avoid the trigger. Stage-dependent treatment with cortisone-containing creams is usually effective. In cases of severe itching, antihistamines can also help. For acute eczema reactions, we offer short-term internal cortisone therapy or, in the case of bacterial superinfection, antibiotic therapy.
By supporting the skin’s natural barrier and stabilizing it with moisturizing, lipid-replenishing creams. Drying factors such as long, hot baths or frequent sauna sessions should be avoided.
The causes are extremely diverse. A distinction is made between itching on inflamed skin (e.g. in atopic dermatitis, urticaria, drug reactions, lichen planus, T-cell lymphomas, blistering skin diseases, psoriasis), itching on unchanged skin (e.g. in kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, or caused by medications, tumors, hematologic or oncologic conditions, neurological, psychiatric, or psychosomatic causes), and itching associated with chronic scratch lesions.
Itching is a signal of distress from the body. It releases specific messenger substances to which fine nerve fibers in the skin (unmyelinated C nerve fibers) respond, triggering the sensation of itching.
After a detailed patient consultation, a physical examination provides the first clues about the origin of the itching. If necessary, we perform blood tests and take skin samples.
Depending on the underlying condition, we can help with cortisone- or capsaicin-containing creams, antihistamines, and antiepileptic medications. For treatment planning, we recommend scheduling a consultation appointment.
