Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins

With heart and soul, for your legs.

A good two-thirds of the population suffers from varicose (spider) veins. Although there are no other associated symptoms, varicose veins are perceived as cosmetically unappealing. In our practice, we treat these fine superficial nets of veins very successfully using targeted sclerotherapy.

Your questions.
Our answers.

When is the best time to perform the treatment?

Since the treated areas are more sensitive to light due to the triggered inflammation process and compression stockings promote the success of the treatment, the autumn and winter months are considered the best times for the treatment.

What will the legs look like afterwards?

After the treatment, the legs initially look worse than before, as the veins still have to break down and bruises can develop. Depending on the degree of treatment and your individual metabolism, your legs will look at their best again after about eight weeks.

What needs to be considered after the treatment?

After the treatment you should lie down with your legs up for about 15 minutes. Thereafter, you should note the following:

Wearing compression stockings of class 1–2 (20 mmHg) for up to three weeks after the treatment improves the result. You may begin with light exercise again after two to three days. Due to an increased risk of thrombosis, long flights should be avoided for approximately two weeks. In order to avoid pigment changes, avoid UV rays (including tanning beds) as long as the inflammation is visible. You can start using the sauna again about three weeks after the treatment.

When should treatment be avoided?

Treatment should be avoided in the following cases: if there is a known allergy to the sclerosing agent, in cases of acute venous thrombosis or if there are infections in the sclerosing area. Treatment is also not recommended during pregnancy, lactation and in cases of peripheral arterial occlusive disease, as is the case with foam sclerotherapy for migraine patients.

Does the treatment need to be repeated?

Since only a certain maximum volume of sclerosing agent may be used per treatment, several therapy sessions may be necessary, depending on the severity of the problem. There should be an interval of approximately one week between treatments in the same area.

Which side effects are known?

Even the most careful treatment can result in skin discoloration, skin necrosis, the formation of new fine veins and superficial and deep vein thromboses. In very rare cases, foam sclerotherapy can cause visual disturbances and migraines.
