Skin Conditions During Pregnancy

We focus on your skin, so you can focus on your child.

We understand that skin changes during pregnancy can be extremely disturbing for prospective mothers. Any suspected pregnancy dermatoses should therefore be checked by an experienced dermatologist. The most common pregnancy dermatoses pose no risks to the unborn child.

Your questions.
Our answers.

What are the pregnancy skin diseases?

Skin diseases during pregnancy include:

  • Intrahepatic pregnancy cholestasis (accumulation of bile acids in the liver)
  • Impetigo herpetiformis (psoriatic skin changes during pregnancy)
  • Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (begins in the stretch marks around the navel)
  • Pemphigoid gestationis (hives and blisters, navel region also affected)
  • Atopic eruption of pregnancy (‘neurodermatitis’ during pregnancy)

How does one recognise a pregnancy dermatosis?

The main symptom is itching, with secondary changes in the skin.

How can pregnancy dermatosis be treated?

Your skin should in all instances receive sufficient moisture through the use of a moisturising cream (HydroLotion, Lipolotion). We prescribe antipruritic creams with an extremely low cortisone content as well as antipruritic antihistamines. If the itching remains, we can use cortisone temporarily in tablet form.
